Gurinder Chadha

ਗੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਚੱਢਾگرندر چڈھا

Film director raised in Southall whose Bend It Like Beckham showed Britain a Punjabi family on screen.

Gurinder Chadha was born in Nairobi to a Punjabi family that moved to Southall in west London. Her films Bhaji on the Beach (1993) and Bend It Like Beckham (2002), about a Sikh girl who wants to play football, told British Punjabi stories with humour. Viceroy's House (2017) is about Partition, which her own family lived through.
