Astrophysicist born in Lahore, who worked out the limit beyond which a dying star must collapse, and won the Nobel Prize in 1983.
Chandrasekhar was born in Lahore in 1910, where his father, from a Tamil family, was working as an accounts officer for the railways. The family moved south when he was a child.
On the voyage to England in 1930, aged nineteen, he calculated the Chandrasekhar limit, the maximum mass of a white dwarf star. He spent his career in Chicago and shared the Nobel Prize in physics in 1983.
