Ghazal singer from a Punjabi Sikh family who brought the ghazal to a mass audience in India.

Jagjit Singh was born in 1941 in Sri Ganganagar to a Punjabi Sikh family and studied in Jalandhar. With his wife Chitra he recorded ghazals in a simple, modern style that made them popular far beyond the old connoisseurs.

He sang in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi, and his gurbani and Punjabi folk records were also widely loved.
