Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha
Scholar who compiled the Mahan Kosh, a vast encyclopedia of Sikh literature, and wrote Ham Hindu Nahin.
Kahn Singh was born in 1861 at Pitho in Nabha state and became the greatest Sikh scholar of his age. He served the Maharaja of Nabha as tutor, minister and judge.
He helped Max Arthur Macauliffe with his six-volume English translation of the Sikh scriptures. In 1898 he published Ham Hindu Nahin, 'We are not Hindus', a short book arguing that the Sikhs are a distinct religion, which became a founding text of modern Sikh identity.
His greatest work is the Gurshabad Ratnakar Mahan Kosh, an encyclopaedia of Sikh literature published in 1930 after fourteen years of work: four volumes, some 64,000 entries. It is still the standard reference. He died in 1938.
