Physicist from Moga, called the father of fibre optics, whose work on sending light through glass fibres underlies the internet.
Kapany was born in Moga in 1926 and studied in Agra and London, where in the 1950s he showed that images could be carried through bundles of glass fibres; he coined the term fibre optics.
He became an inventor and businessman in California, and a collector and patron of Sikh art.
