Balakot

Where Sikh forces under Sher Singh defeated and killed Syed Ahmad Barelvi in May 1831.

Balakot is a town at the entrance of the Kaghan valley in Hazara.

In May 1831 a Sikh army under Prince Sher Singh defeated and killed Syed Ahmad Barelvi and Shah Ismail here, ending their jihad movement. Their graves are in the town.

The town was destroyed in the earthquake of 2005 and rebuilt.

Maharaja Sher Singh1807 – 1843

Son of Ranjit Singh who won the throne in 1841 with the army's support. He was shot by the Sandhawalia chiefs in September 1843, the same day his chief minister Dhian Singh was killed.
