Sainis farm the fertile land of the Doaba and the Shivalik foothills, and are Hindu or Sikh. Like the Arains they were known for intensive gardening near towns, and many served in the army.
Many Saini families went abroad in the twentieth century, to East Africa, Britain and Canada.
