Sucha Singh Soorma
The ballad of the man from Samaon who killed for his family's honour and was hunted as an outlaw.
Sucha Singh of Samaon, in the Malwa, killed the man who had dishonoured his family and his brother's wife, and became an outlaw. His story, told and retold in kavishri and folk song, turned him into a soorma, a hero, in the eyes of the villages.
The ballads of Sucha Soorma and Jeona Maur show the old Malwa code of honour and revenge, which Punjabi singers still draw on.
