Daya Ram Sahni

ਦਯਾ ਰਾਮ ਸਾਹਨੀدیا رام ساہنی

Archaeologist from Bhera who dug at Harappa in 1921 and so helped reveal the Indus civilisation to the world.

Daya Ram Sahni was born in Bhera, on the Jhelum, studied Sanskrit at Lahore and joined the Archaeological Survey of India. In 1920 and 1921 he led the first proper excavations at Harappa, on the Ravi, while R. D. Banerji dug at Mohenjo-daro. Together their finds showed that a great Bronze Age civilisation, as old as Egypt and Mesopotamia, had flourished in the Punjab and Sindh.

In 1931 he became the first Indian Director-General of the Archaeological Survey.
