Khudadad Khan
ਖ਼ੁਦਾਦਾਦ ਖ਼ਾਨخداداد خان
Machine-gunner from Chakwal who held his post at Ypres in 1914 and became the first Indian soldier to win the Victoria Cross.
Khudadad Khan, from the village of Dab in the Chakwal district, served in the 129th Baluchis. At Hollebeke near Ypres in October 1914 his machine-gun team held off a German attack; the rest of the crew were killed, and he kept firing until he was wounded and left for dead.
He survived to become the first Indian soldier awarded the Victoria Cross, and lived until 1971 in what had become Pakistan.
