Bhai Subeg Singh & Shahbaz Singh
Father and son broken on the wheel in Lahore under Zakariya Khan's successors for refusing to convert.
Subeg Singh was a learned Sikh of Jambar near Lahore, who had served as a revenue official and an intermediary between the Mughal government and the Sikhs. Shahbaz Singh was his young son.
Around 1745, under the governors of Lahore, the boy was arrested for refusing to convert and his teacher's accusation that he had insulted the Prophet, and the father was seized too. Both were offered their lives if they became Muslims, and both refused.
They were tied to wheels set with blades and broken to death in Lahore. A gurdwara in Lahore, Shaheed Ganj Singh Singhnian, marks the area of the executions of the eighteenth century, and their names are among those remembered as 'those who were broken on the wheel' in the Ardas.
