The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Mata Tripta

Guru Nanak's mother, who in the janamsakhis defends her son's unworldly ways against his father's frustration.

Mata Tripta was the mother of Guru Nanak and his sister Nanaki, and the wife of Mehta Kalu, the accountant of Talwandi. Little is recorded of her beyond the janamsakhis.

In those stories she is the tender mother who defends her son's strange ways against his practical father's frustration: when he gives away the money for trade, when he lies under the tree all day, when he refuses to tend the cattle. She understood, the stories suggest, before others did.

She lived to see her son become famous and is honoured by Sikhs as the mother of the Guru.
