The Arains were the great vegetable and fruit growers of the Punjab, farming the irrigated land around the cities, and were almost all Muslim. A family of Arain mians of Baghbanpura served as keepers of the Shalimar Gardens of Lahore for generations.
Many Arain families of the eastern districts moved west in 1947. Sir Fazl-i-Husain, founder of the Unionist Party, came from an Arain family of Batala.
