Gujjars were the herders of the river plains and the hills, keeping the buffalo that gave the Punjab its milk and ghee. Tradition links the names of Gujrat and Gujranwala to them. Most in the west and the hills are Muslim, many in the east Hindu.
In the high hills the Gujjar and Bakarwal herders still move with their flocks between summer and winter pastures.
