The hill rajas of Kangra, Guler, Chamba, Nurpur and Jammu were Hindu Rajputs, patrons of the Pahari painters; the Dogra Rajputs of Jammu, Gulab Singh and his brothers, rose to power at the court of Lahore. On the plains and in the west most Rajputs became Muslim: Bhattis, Janjuas, Chibs, Manhas and others.
Dulla Bhatti, a Muslim Rajput of the bar who defied Akbar, is still sung about every Lohri; the Janjuas held the Salt Range for centuries. Rajput Muslims and Hindus formed a large part of the British Punjab's army.
