Carpenters, blacksmiths, masons and builders

The village carpenters and blacksmiths built and mended the ploughs, carts, wells and houses of the Punjab, and are found in every faith. Bhai Lalo, the carpenter of Saidpur with whom Guru Nanak chose to eat, was a Tarkhan.

Sikh carpenters and craftsmen took the name Ramgarhia from Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, a misl chief from a carpenter family. Ramgarhias built much of the railways and towns of colonial East Africa, and many later settled in Britain.
