Punjab's Brahmins served as family priests and teachers. The Mohyals, a Brahmin community of the north-west of soldiers and administrators, gave the Sikh tradition several of its heroes.
Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Sati Das, Mohyal Brahmins in Guru Tegh Bahadur's service, were tortured to death in Delhi with him in 1675; Kesar Singh Chhibber, also a Mohyal, wrote one of the first chronicles of the Gurus.
