Traditionally
Custodians of Sufi shrines, pirs, landholders

Families descended, or claiming descent, from the Prophet or from great Sufi saints became the hereditary custodians of the shrines, the sajjada nashins. The heirs of Baba Farid at Pakpattan and of Bahauddin Zakariya at Multan held land, followers and great influence.
