Baloch tribes settled the land between the Indus and the Suleiman hills from the fifteenth century and gave Dera Ghazi Khan and Dera Ismail Khan their names. Pathan families founded or ruled towns across the Punjab: the Kasur Pathans, the Saddozai nawabs of Multan, the nawabs of Malerkotla.
Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan of Malerkotla protested against the bricking up of Guru Gobind Singh's young sons at Sirhind in 1705, and Malerkotla is remembered for it to this day.
