Amarinder Singh
Son of the last Maharaja of Patiala, soldier and twice Chief Minister, who quit Parliament in protest at the army's attack on the Darbar Sahib in 1984.
Amarinder Singh is the son of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, the last ruler of Patiala. He served in the Sikh Regiment and fought in the 1965 war before entering politics with the Congress party.
In June 1984 he resigned from Parliament and from the Congress in protest at Operation Blue Star. He later returned to the Congress and was Chief Minister from 2002 to 2007, when his government passed a law cancelling Punjab's water-sharing agreements with its neighbours, and again from 2017 to 2021. Forced out by his own party in 2021, he formed a new one and then joined the BJP.
