Beant Singh
Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992, under whom the insurgency was crushed. Killed by a suicide bomber in Chandigarh in August 1995.
Beant Singh was born in 1922 at Bilaspur in Ludhiana district and was a Congress politician. He became Chief Minister of Punjab in 1992 after an election boycotted by most Sikh parties, with a turnout of about a quarter.
His government, with K. P. S. Gill, crushed the militancy, at the cost of thousands of extrajudicial killings and disappearances.
On 31 August 1995 he was killed by a suicide bomber, Dilawar Singh, outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh.
