Bhai Bota Singh & Garja Singh
Two Sikhs who, to show that Sikhs had not been wiped out as the governor claimed, set up a toll post on the Grand Trunk Road and fought the troops sent against them to the death.
In 1739 the governor of Lahore, Zakariya Khan, announced that the Sikhs had been wiped out. Two Sikhs, Bota Singh of Bharana and Garja Singh of Ranghreta origin, who had been hiding in the forests, decided to prove him wrong.
They set up a toll post on the Grand Trunk Road near Nurdin Sarai, near Tarn Taran, and began collecting a toll of one anna on a cart and one paisa on a donkey from every traveller, in the name of the Khalsa. They even wrote a letter to the governor announcing their tax.
Zakariya Khan sent a force of a hundred horsemen. The two Sikhs fought them in the open and were killed. They had shown that the Khalsa was not dead, and the story was told in every Sikh camp.
