Ghulam Muhammad Baksh, the Great Gama, was born in Amritsar in 1878 into a family of Kashmiri wrestlers, and trained from childhood with a regime of thousands of squats and press-ups a day.
In 1910 he went to London and won the world championship when the Polish champion Stanislaus Zbyszko refused to continue their bout; in 1928 he beat Zbyszko in under a minute at Patiala. He was never defeated in a career of more than fifty years.
After Partition he lived in Lahore, where he is remembered for having protected his Hindu neighbours in 1947. He died in poverty in 1960.
