Poet, lyricist and film-maker born at Dina near Jhelum, whose Partition memories run through his work.
Sampooran Singh Kalra, who writes as Gulzar, was born in 1934 at Dina, near Jhelum, and came to Delhi after Partition. He worked in a Bombay garage before becoming one of the great lyricists of Hindi cinema.
His poems and stories return again and again to the Punjab he left; he won an Academy Award in 2009 for the lyrics of 'Jai Ho'.
