Lakhi Shah Vanjara

ਲੱਖੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ

Wealthy trader who smuggled Guru Tegh Bahadur's body away in his cart and burned his own house to cremate it. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj stands there.

Lakhi Shah Vanjara was a wealthy contractor and transporter of the Lubana community who supplied the Mughal army and lived at Raisina village on the edge of Delhi.

When Guru Tegh Bahadur's body lay in Chandni Chowk after his execution in November 1675, Lakhi Shah, with his son, drove his carts of cotton through the city in the dust storm, put the body under the bales and carried it home.

Knowing that a public cremation would bring the soldiers, he piled wood in his own house and set the whole house on fire, burning the Guru's body inside it. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, beside the Indian Parliament, stands on the spot.
