The British lawyer who drew the line through the Punjab in five weeks, having never been to India before.
Radcliffe chaired the boundary commissions for the Punjab and Bengal, with two Muslim and two non-Muslim judges on each, who could not agree; the decisions were his. He worked from maps and census tables in Delhi in the summer heat and finished in five weeks.
He left India on the day the award was published, refused his fee, and burned his papers.
