Bhagat Sadhna
A butcher from Sindh, a trade looked down on, whose hymn sits in raga Bilawal.
Sadhna was a qasai, a butcher, of Sehwan in Sindh, probably in the thirteenth century, whose trade made him an outcaste. Despite it he became famous for his devotion.
His single hymn in the Guru Granth Sahib, in raga Bilawal, is a plea for God's grace, comparing the devotee to a drop of rain falling for the thirsty chatrik bird. A tradition holds that he was walled up alive for his faith, and a shrine at Sirhind is associated with him.
His presence in the scripture, a Muslim butcher among Brahmins and kings, is part of its insistence that birth and trade do not bar anyone from God.
