Shabeg Singh

ਸ਼ੁਬੇਗ ਸਿੰਘجنرل سبیگ سنگھ

Decorated Indian Army major general, dismissed shortly before retirement, who organised the defences of the Harmandir Sahib complex and was killed in Blue Star.

Shabeg Singh was born in 1925 at Khiala near Amritsar and joined the Indian Army. He was a brilliant soldier, decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and trained the Mukti Bahini guerrillas in the Bangladesh war of 1971.

He was dismissed shortly before retirement in 1976 on corruption charges, which he believed were false and inspired by enmity. He joined Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

In 1984 he organised the defences of the Harmandir Sahib complex, and his positions inflicted heavy losses on the army. He was killed defending the Akal Takht on 6 June 1984. The Sikhs honour him as a shaheed.
