The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Uch Sharif

ਉੱਚاچ

City of medieval Sufi shrines, birthplace of Bulleh Shah.

Uch Sharif, near the meeting of the Chenab and the Sutlej in Bahawalpur district, was one of the great centres of Sufism in medieval India, with the shrines of the Bukhari and Gilani Syeds.

The tombs of Bibi Jawindi and other saints, decorated with blue and white tiles, are among the most beautiful buildings in Pakistan, though half washed away by floods. Bulleh Shah was born here in 1680.

Guru Gobind Singh's escape from Machhiwara disguised as the 'Pir of Uch' recalls the town's fame.
