The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

The frescoes of the Golden Temple

The inner walls of the Harmandir Sahib are covered in painted flowers, vines and animals, with gilded gesso and mirror work, the work of Sikh artist families such as Bhai Kehar Singh and Bhai Gian Singh Naqqash.

The inner walls of the Harmandir Sahib are covered with frescoes and gilded stucco work, made by Sikh artists in the nineteenth century, after Ranjit Singh's renovation.

The designs are flowers, vines, fruit, birds and animals, in panels with mirror-work and gold gesso. They are called naqqashi. The artists combined Mughal, Rajput and Pahari motifs into a Sikh style.

Bhai Gian Singh Naqqash, a master of the art, worked on them in the early twentieth century. Some were damaged in 1984 and in later renovations.
