Gujranwala
Seat of the Sukerchakia misl and birthplace of Ranjit Singh (1780) and Hari Singh Nalwa (1791).
Gujranwala, north of Lahore on the Grand Trunk Road, was the seat of the Sukerchakia misl. Charat Singh fortified it in the 1750s and beat the Afghans here in 1761.
Ranjit Singh was born here in 1780, and so was Hari Singh Nalwa in 1791. The samadhi of Mahan Singh, Ranjit Singh's father, stands in the town, and the house where Ranjit Singh was born is said to survive.
It is now a large industrial city in Pakistan, famous for its wrestlers and its food.
