Diwan Lakhpat Rai
Minister of the Lahore governors who, after Sikhs killed his brother Jaspat Rai in battle, swore to wipe out the Sikhs and led the Chhota Ghallughara of 1746, banning even the word 'Guru'.
Lakhpat Rai was a Khatri minister of the Lahore governors Zakariya Khan and Yahiya Khan. His brother Jaspat Rai, faujdar of Eminabad, was killed fighting the Sikhs in 1746.
Lakhpat Rai swore he would wipe out the Sikhs. He led the campaign of 1746 in which the Sikhs were cornered in the marshes of Kahnuwan near Gurdaspur, and thousands were killed or captured in the Chhota Ghallughara, the Lesser Holocaust. Sikh prisoners were executed in Lahore, and he ordered that the word guru be replaced by gur, jaggery, and that Sikh scriptures be destroyed.
Later the Sikhs captured him, and he died a prisoner. He is remembered as one of the great persecutors.
