Mahan Singh Mirpuri
Commander of the Jamrud garrison who held the fort after Hari Singh Nalwa fell, keeping his death secret.
Mahan Singh Mirpuri was a commander in Hari Singh Nalwa's frontier army and the commandant of the fort of Jamrud at the mouth of the Khyber Pass.
In April 1837 an Afghan army under Akbar Khan besieged Jamrud with a small garrison of some six hundred men. Mahan Singh held the fort for days until Hari Singh Nalwa arrived with relief. When Nalwa was mortally wounded in the fighting, he asked that his death be kept secret, and Mahan Singh hid the body, put it on display as if alive, and held the fort until reinforcements arrived from Lahore.
He continued to serve on the frontier and is said to have died in 1846. He is remembered as the man who saved Jamrud.
