Bhai Mati Das, Sati Das & Dayala
Three companions of Guru Tegh Bahadur executed before him in Delhi: Mati Das sawn in half, Sati Das wrapped in cotton and burned, Dayala boiled alive.
Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Sati Das were brothers, Mohyal Brahmins of Karyala near Chakwal in the Jhelum district, who served Guru Tegh Bahadur as his ministers; Bhai Dayala was another devoted Sikh of the Guru's household.
In 1675 they went with the Guru to Delhi and were imprisoned with him in the Kotwali at Chandni Chowk. Pressed to convert to Islam to save themselves, they refused. Mati Das was tied between two posts and sawn in half from head to foot, reciting the Japji. Dayala was boiled alive in a cauldron. Sati Das was wrapped in cotton soaked in oil and set alight.
They were killed in front of the Guru, to break him; he did not break, and was beheaded the next day. Their names are recalled every day in the Sikh Ardas, and a museum stands near Gurdwara Sis Ganj in their memory.
