The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Nabi Khan & Ghani Khan

ਨਬੀ ਖ਼ਾਨ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਨੀ ਖ਼ਾਨ

Pathan horse dealers who carried Guru Gobind Singh out of Machhiwara on a litter, passing him off to Mughal patrols as a Muslim holy man.

Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan were two Pathan brothers of Machhiwara who traded in horses and had sold horses to Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur, where they had been treated with honour.

In December 1704, after Chamkaur, the Guru reached the jungles of Machhiwara alone, his feet bleeding. Hidden by the Sikh Gulaba, he was found by the two brothers, who dressed him in blue robes as Uch da Pir, a Muslim holy man of Uch, and carried him on a litter through the Mughal pickets, telling the soldiers they were escorting their pir.

When the soldiers grew suspicious, a local qazi vouched for the pir. The brothers brought the Guru safely to the Malwa, and he gave them a hukamnama, a letter of blessing, which their descendants kept. A gurdwara at Machhiwara honours their memory.
