Bhagat Parmanand
Devotional poet whose single hymn asks what use listening to scripture is if it changes nothing.
Parmanand was a devotional poet of the sixteenth century, sometimes identified with Paramanand Das of the Vaishnav Ashtachhap poets of Braj, though this is uncertain.
His single hymn in the Guru Granth Sahib, in raga Sarang, asks a hard question: what use is it to listen to the Puranas, if devotion does not well up in you and you do not give to the hungry? It lists the sins that remain untouched by ritual and says that the company of the holy is better than all of them.
It is a short poem, but it says in a few lines what Guru Nanak said over a lifetime: that knowledge without change of heart is empty.
