The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Bhai Sukha Singh & Mehtab Singh

ਸੁੱਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਤਾਬ ਸਿੰਘسُکھا سنگھ کلسی

Rode into Amritsar disguised as revenue officials in 1740 and beheaded Massa Ranghar, who was holding dances in the Harmandir Sahib.

In 1740 the Harmandir Sahib was in the hands of Massa Ranghar, a Mughal official of Mandiala, who had turned it into a place of revelry, smoking and watching dancing girls in the holy place while the Sikhs were hiding in the deserts of Rajasthan. When a Sikh brought the news to the jatha of Bikaner, two young men volunteered.

Mehtab Singh of Mirankot and Sukha Singh of Mari Kamboke rode to Amritsar dressed as revenue officials, carrying bags filled with stones that looked like money. They entered the Harmandir Sahib, approached Massa Ranghar, cut off his head, put it in one of the bags and rode away before the guards could react.

They brought the head to the Sikhs at Bikaner. Mehtab Singh was later captured and broken on the wheel in Lahore; Sukha Singh died fighting in 1752. They are remembered in Sikh paintings, in which two horsemen ride away with a head in a bag.
