Lord Dalhousie

ਡਲਹੌਜ਼ੀلارڈ ڈلہوزی

Governor-General who annexed Punjab in 1849, deposed Duleep Singh and sent the Koh-i-Noor to Queen Victoria.

James Broun-Ramsay, Earl and later Marquess of Dalhousie, was born in 1812 in Scotland and became Governor-General of India in 1848, at thirty-five.

When the revolt at Multan turned into the Second Anglo-Sikh War, he declared that the Sikh nation had called for war and would have it with a vengeance. After the victory at Gujrat in 1849 he annexed the Punjab on his own authority, deposed the ten-year-old Duleep Singh and had the Koh-i-Noor sent to Queen Victoria.

His policy of annexation, by war and by the doctrine of lapse, helped provoke the rising of 1857. He left India in 1856 and died in 1860.
