Khizar Hayat Tiwana
The last Premier of undivided Punjab, who held Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs together in one government until March 1947.
Malik Khizar Hayat Tiwana came from the great landowning Tiwana family of Shahpur. He led the Unionist Party, the cross-faith party of Punjab's landholders, and became Premier in 1942 after the death of Sikandar Hayat Khan.
In the 1946 election the Muslim League won most Muslim seats, but Khizar formed a coalition with the Congress and the Akalis and refused to make the Punjab part of a Muslim League Pakistan. Under fierce agitation he resigned on 2 March 1947. Within days Lahore, Amritsar, Multan and the villages around Rawalpindi were burning: the first great killings of Partition.
He left Pakistan and died in California in 1975, the last voice of a Punjab that had tried to stay whole.
