Soan valley

ਸੋਅਨپنجاب پٹھار

River valley with some of South Asia's oldest stone tools, the Soanian culture.

The Soan river flows across the Pothohar plateau below the Margalla hills into the Indus. Along its terraces, archaeologists have found stone tools made by early humans hundreds of thousands of years ago, the Soanian culture, among the oldest evidence of humans in South Asia.

The Pothohar is a rough country of ravines, gorges and low hills, with its own dialect and traditions, and the legends of Raja Rasalu.

Rawalpindi and Islamabad now sprawl over much of it.
