Satish Gujral
Painter, sculptor and architect from Jhelum, deaf from childhood, whose paintings of Partition are among its strongest images.
Satish Gujral was born in Jhelum and lost his hearing after an illness at eight. He studied art in Lahore and Mexico, and his paintings of refugees and grief in the years after 1947 made his name.
He went on to sculpture, murals and architecture; his design for the Belgian Embassy in Delhi was named among the thousand finest buildings of the 20th century. He was the brother of Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.
