Charat Singh Sukerchakia
Grandfather of Ranjit Singh and founder of the Sukerchakia misl's power at Gujranwala, where he beat the Afghan governor in 1761.
Charat Singh was born in 1721 at Sukarchak near Gujranwala, a Sandhawalia Jat, and joined the Singhpuria jatha before founding his own, the Sukerchakia misl.
He made Gujranwala his base and fortified it in the 1750s. In 1761, after Abdali's victory at Panipat, the Afghan governor Khwaja Ubaid Khan besieged Gujranwala; Charat Singh and the other misls defeated him, one of the first Sikh victories over a full Afghan army. He took part in the campaigns against Abdali in 1762 and 1764 and expanded his lands to Wazirabad, Rohtas and Pind Dadan Khan.
He was killed in 1770 when his own matchlock burst in his hand during a battle with the Bhangis near Jammu. His son Mahan Singh and grandson Ranjit Singh built the Sikh Empire on the foundations he laid.
