Jai Singh Kanhaiya
Head of the Kanhaiya misl and for a time the most powerful chief in Punjab. His daughter-in-law Sada Kaur arranged the marriage that allied the Kanhaiyas with Ranjit Singh.
Jai Singh was born in 1712 at Kahna near Lahore, a Sandhu Jat, and took amrit from Nawab Kapur Singh. He founded the Kanhaiya misl, which held lands north of Amritsar around Batala and Mukerian.
In the 1770s he was the most powerful chief in the Punjab, and he helped Jassa Singh Ahluwalia expel the Ramgarhias across the Sutlej. His power was broken when the Sukerchakias under Mahan Singh, allied with the Ramgarhias, killed his son Gurbakhsh Singh in battle in 1785.
His widowed daughter-in-law Sada Kaur arranged the marriage of her daughter to Mahan Singh's son Ranjit Singh. Jai Singh died in 1793, and the Kanhaiya power passed through Sada Kaur to the Maharaja.
