Paonta Sahib

ਪਾਉਂਟਾ ਸਾਹਿਬپاونٹا صاحب

On the Yamuna, where young Guru Gobind Singh lived from about 1685 to 1688, writing poetry and gathering 52 poets at his court.

Paonta Sahib lies on the Yamuna in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, where the Raja of Sirmaur invited Guru Gobind Singh to stay in 1685. The Guru spent some three years here, writing much of his poetry, studying and gathering poets and soldiers around him.

Its gurdwara on the riverbank has a Kavi Darbar, the hall of the poets, where the Guru held poetry gatherings, and a museum with weapons of his time. The Guru's eldest son, Ajit Singh, was born here in 1687.

The battle of Bhangani was fought a few miles away in 1688, after which the Guru returned to Anandpur.
