Mata Khivi

ਮਾਤਾ ਖੀਵੀماتا کھیوی

Wife of Guru Angad who ran the langar at Khadur. The only woman mentioned by name in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Mata Khivi was born in 1506, the daughter of a trader of Sangar Kot, and married Lehna, the future Guru Angad. She had four children.

At Khadur she took charge of the langar, and it became famous under her care: the Guru Granth Sahib, in a hymn by the bards Satta and Balvand, says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a good woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade, and that in her langar rich kheer with ghee was distributed. She is the only woman named in the Guru Granth Sahib in praise.

She continued to serve after the Guru's death in 1552 and died in 1582. She is remembered as the mother of the langar.
