The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Satta & Balwand

ਸੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਲਵੰਡ

Muslim minstrels at the Gurus' court whose Ramkali ki Var, a ballad on the unity of the Gurus, is in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Satta and Balvand were Muslim musicians, mirasis or rababis, at the court of Guru Angad and his successors, who sang the Gurus' hymns to the rabab.

Tradition says they quarrelled with Guru Arjan over money, refused to sing and spoke against the Gurus, and were struck with leprosy; they were brought back through the intercession of Bhai Ladha, and Guru Arjan forgave them. Their composition, the Ramkali ki Var, was included in the Guru Granth Sahib.

The Var is a ballad on the unity of the Gurus: it says that one light passed from Nanak to Angad to Amar Das to Ram Das to Arjan, and that the Guru changed only the body. It is the scriptural source for the Sikh idea that all ten Gurus were one light, and it contains the praise of Mata Khivi's langar.
