The land of five waters gave the world its first cities, its saints and its songs. Broken by every empire that crossed it, it is still ours to remember, and to make whole again.

Shah Daula's shrine, Gujrat

ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੌਲਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ

Shrine of a 17th-century saint of Gujrat who built bridges and drains, and to which childless couples once gave a child.

Shah Daula (died about 1676) was a Sufi of Gujrat known for his building works: bridges, wells and drains for the town.

The shrine became tied to a cruel custom: couples who prayed here for a child promised their firstborn to it, and some of these children, born with very small heads, were kept by the shrine and sent out to beg. The government stopped the practice in the 1960s.
