Sack of Samana
Banda Singh's first great strike, on a wealthy town that was home to the executioners of Guru Tegh Bahadur and the younger Sahibzade.
Banda Singh Bahadur, sent north by Guru Gobind Singh in 1708, gathered thousands of Sikh peasants in the country between the Yamuna and the Sutlej. His first great target was Samana, a rich Mughal town south of Patiala.
Samana was the home of Jalaluddin, the executioner who had beheaded Guru Tegh Bahadur, and of the executioners of the young Sahibzade at Sirhind. On 26 November 1709 Banda Singh's army attacked and took the town by storm. It was sacked, and much of its population, especially the families of the officials, was killed.
The fall of Samana announced Banda Singh's rise to the whole Punjab and brought thousands more to his side.
