When Lala Lajpat Rai died after a police beating in Lahore in 1928, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru answered. Their trial made them heroes across India, and their hanging in Lahore in March 1931 made Bhagat Singh the best-loved martyr of the Punjab on both sides of the border.
