Shah Hussain's shrine, Lahore

ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੁਸੈਨ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ

Shrine of the poet Shah Hussain and his beloved Madho Lal, where Lahore holds its great spring fair, the Mela Chiraghan.

Shah Hussain (1538 – 1599) was a Sufi poet who wrote kafis in plain Punjabi, danced in the streets and wore red. He loved a Brahmin boy, Madho Lal, and the two are buried together at Baghbanpura, beside the Shalimar Gardens, so that the shrine is called Madho Lal Hussain.

Every spring the Mela Chiraghan, the festival of lamps, fills the shrine with fires, drummers and dancers.
